AWARD ANNOUNCEMENTS

The recipients of the 2009 Arts Foundation of New Zealand Award for Patronage and Arts Foundation Governors' Award will be announced on the evening of Monday 20 July. Information on the recipients will be available on this page from Wednesday 22 July.

2008 New Generation Awards

The recipients of the 2008 New Generation Awards are music-maker Jeff Henderson, new media artist Alex Monteith, opera singer Madeleine Pierard, writer/actor Jo Randerson and writer Anna Sanderson. The Arts Foundation of New Zealand, Principal Sponsor Forsyth Barr, and Freemason’s New Zealand announced recipients at an Awards ceremony held in Christchurch on 24 November 2008.  Five artists each received $25,000 and were recognised for their early achievements.. The Awards were presented by Freemasons New Zealand, who provided the donation for the artists. The New Generation Awards are available to artists practicing in any art form, with recipients selected by a Curator without their knowing they are under consideration.   This year’s Curator was Gregory O’Brien, a Wellington-based writer, teacher, and painter.  Gregory said “the five artists chosen have a real urgency, excitement, commitment and originality in their work – a sense of building upon a tradition within their fields (finding sources of inspiration both in New Zealand and abroad) and also surging forth into the future.”

2008 Laureate Awards

The recipients of the 2008 Arts Foundation of New Zealand Laureate Awards are visual artist Shane Cotton, costume designer Ngila Dickson, actor George Henare, writer Lloyd Jones and baritone Teddy Tahu Rhodes. Each recipient received a donation of $50,000 and a statuette designed by sculptor Terry Stringer at an Awards event held on 3 November at the Embassy Theatre in Wellington. Artists, whose careers are in full flight, were honoured in recognition of their artistic achievements and as a challenge for them to continue working at high levels. Now into its ninth year, the Arts Foundation has acknowledged forty-four Laureates, with donations totalling $1.87 million. The Laureate Awards are funded through income generated by the Arts Foundation Endowment Fund, which is managed by Forsyth Barr. The artists were chosen by a selection panel of distinguished peers and arts experts without their knowing they were under consideration. A career Award, not tagged to any particular project, the recipients do not fill out forms, read fine print or make special applications. The 2008 panel consisted of: Scilla Askew (Director, SOUNZ), Graham Beattie (former publisher), Jenny Harper (Director, Christchurch Art Gallery), Gabrielle Huria (Film Producer), Marilyn Kohlhase (advisor, Pacific arts) and Deirdre Tarrant (dance).
