Award for Patronage.

John Drawbridge, Double Portrait No. IV, 1998, Mezzotint and Drypoint, 150 x 170mm
Denis & Verna Adam (2006 Award for Patronage recipients),
made a donation to Tanya Ashken to honour her husband John Drawbridge posthumously.

For centuries, the arts have flourished through the contribution of patrons. Many of the greatest artistic achievements would not have occurred without the support of generous, passionate individuals willing to provide material assistance to realise artistic excellence.

The Arts Foundation of New Zealand Award for Patronage celebrates New Zealand philanthropic support for the arts. The annual Award is made to a person, couple, or private trust for outstanding contributions as arts patrons. The inaugural recipients were Denis and Verna Adam, Jenny Gibbs in 2007 and Gillian and Roderick Deanes are the recipients for 2008. In time, the recipients of the Award will constitute a grand circle of generous New Zealanders whose contributions have had a significant impact on the arts in this country. Honoured for their contributions, recipients are celebrated as role models for all who are passionate about the arts.

The Trustees of the Arts Foundation select the recipients of the Award. In order to demonstrate patronage in action, the Foundation offers the Award recipient the task of selecting an artist, artists, organisations or projects, to receive a donation of $20,000.

“Whatever small contributions
we are able to make to the arts
and the other activities which we support, is much more than
matched by the enjoyment and pleasure we receive from
being able to help other people
in a small way.”

Being involved with artists of all
sorts keeps one entertained,
but also constantly challenged. You have to retain an open and questioning and tolerant mind. I love it!"

All we have achieved is that we have assisted some young New Zealanders to try and struggle upwards in the field of the arts. And it gives me something to do as well! As an old guy it keeps me moderately busy and I think that's quite important when you are an octogenarian - to have something which keeps your mind functioning even if it functions more slowly than it used to! - Denis Adam, CNZM, OBE

2008 recipients Gillian and Roderick Deane

Gillian and Roderick created the Deane Endowment Trust in memory of their daughter Kristen, to assist and benefit the community and individuals in the fields of the arts and culture, scientific research, education, the environment, disability, and the work of charitable voluntary organisations. The Trust focus on the arts and culture is by way of sponsorship of a number of exhibitions and publications by a range of Art Galleries and Museums; by the use of scholarships and grants, especially for educational purposes for young singers, musicians, dancers and artists exhibiting outstanding potential; and through donations to a number of classical music and opera organisations particularly those centred in Wellington.

Numerous organisations and individuals involved in the arts have benefited from the Deane Endowment Trust but are too numerous to mention. They include: the New Dowse in Lower Hutt and the City Gallery Wellington building extension programmes; most major and some smaller art galleries in the Wellington region, including Te Papa, Pataka, Mahara and the Portrait Gallery; the NZ Symphony Orchestra, the NZ Chamber Music and Opera societies, the NZ String Quartet, the NZ Youth Choir and Tower Voices. In addition the Deane Endowment Trust has provided awards and scholarships in a number of areas to young people establishing themselves in the academic world and on the international stage; contributed toward publications including a range of books and catalogues produced by Te Papa, the Museum of New Zealand, the City Gallery Wellington and for biographies, and promoted and helped establish a number of charitable trusts including the Arts Foundation of New Zealand.

Support from the Deanes has also spread across the Tasman with a number of Australian organisations receiving support, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, the Victorian Tapestry Workshop and Opera Australia.

Gillian and Roderick Deane are Founding Patrons of the Arts Foundation. Gillian offered valuable insight to the working party during the Foundation’s conceptual period. With her understanding of the arts and the need for patronage, Gillian helped formulate the vision and the mechanism for achieving the Arts Foundation’s business plan.

2007 Recipient - Jenny Gibbs

As a philanthropist and art collector Jenny’s influence has been immense on raising the profile of New Zealand art internationally, and within New Zealand, particularly Auckland. Jenny has demonstrated her commitment to the arts through leadership of numerous arts projects with her most ambitious personal undertakings being the establishment of the New Gallery for Auckland City Art Gallery and supporting New Zealand’s presence at the Venice Biennale.

Jenny has had many important roles including Founder and Chair of the Patrons of the Auckland Art Gallery and the Auckland Contemporary Arts Trust, Founding Trustee of the Arts Foundation of New Zealand, Foundation Donor and Board Member of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, and as a long time member of the prestigious International Council of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Her enthusiasm and passion for the arts also sees Jenny as a Founding Patron and significant donor to many arts organisations and a supporter of private individuals. She provides significant support to the arts through permitting the use of her home in Auckland for advocacy and social functions. In 2004 her contributions to the Auckland region were acknowledged when she received the second Auckland City Distinguished Citizen Award and she is widely recognised as one of this country’s most comprehensive private collectors.

In addition to supporting the arts, Jenny is Pro-Chancellor of the University of Auckland, has been on the Auckland University Council almost continuously since 1976 and is a founding Trustee of both the Auckland Medical School Foundation and Auckland University Foundation. She supports many other charitable organisations and is an active member of various civic organisations such as the New Zealand Institute and the Committee for Auckland.

Inaugural Recipients - Denis and Verna Adam

Denis and Verna started to collect objets d'art in the 1960s. In 1975 they decided to create the Adam Foundation to consolidate the ownership of this growing collection. Gradually the Adam Foundation activities extended to support arts in general and have tended to focus on emerging artists when it comes to philanthropy. Following in the spirit of Ralph Waldo Emerson who wrote to Walt Whitman, saying, "I greet you at the beginning of a great career," Denis and Verna have greeted many artists at the start of their careers.

Their support includes the Adam Art Gallery and the Adam Concert Room at Victoria University of Wellington, the Adam Foundation Prize for Creative Writing, the Adam Portraiture Award and Exhibition, the Adam Chamber Music Festival, the NZSO National Youth Orchestra, and the Adam International Cello Competition. The Adams also fund Playmarket's Adam Playreading series at Downstage Theatre as well as providing funds for an extensive number of individuals and one-off events.
